数詞は、独特である。

名詞、形容詞、限定詞にも分類されるが、ここで説明する。

1） 基数詞　
　a） 数え方　
　　仰々しい名前ですが、何てことない普通の数字、1,2,3,,,,10,,,,100,,,,1000,,,,10000,,,, です。

　　　　one, two, three, four, five, six. seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen,
　　　　fifｔeen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty, twenty-one,,,,,,,, thirty, thirty-one,
　　　　,,,,,,, forty, forty-one,,,,,,,, fifty, fifty-one,,,,,,,, sixty, sixty-one,,,,,,,, seventy-one,,,,,,,, eighty,

　　と、永遠に続く。　
　　＜覚え方＞
　　　1．13までは、spell をまる覚え、
　　　2．14から19までは、「一桁+teen」となるが、
　　　　　　five + teen → fifteen （発音し易さ）と、eightteen でなく、eighteen （ｔ は重ねない）
　　　3．20は twenty とまる覚え、
　　　4．30、40、50、、、、は、13、14、15、、、、「一桁+teen」の teen を ty に置き換えるが、
　　　　　　fourty でなく、forty
　　　5．１の位は、「−」で10の位と繋げて、
　　　6．100は、hundred、1000は、thousand で、
　　　7．これ以降は、10³ずつ単位が出来る。　10⁶＝ million、10⁹＝ billion、10¹²＝ trillion、、、

　　＜注意点＞
　　　1．基本的に、数字を表す hundred、thousand、million、billion、trillion、、、は複数形にはしない（s は
　　　　　付けない）。
　　　　　　　200 → two hundred、30億 → three billion
　　　2．複数形にする場合は、次の様な表現で、「多数の」、「無数の」、「莫大な数の」の意味となる。
　　　　　　　hundreds of、 thousands of、 millions of、trillions of

　　日本語と英語の大きな違いは、前者が４桁おきに区切って表現するのに対して、後者は３桁おきに区切る
　　事。　ここで数学に長けた学生は気付きませんか？　時計が12進法であり、12って数字は、1、2、3、4、6
　　と多くの数字で割り切れるが、多く割り切れる3をベースにした合理的な欧米文化と、何故か、4をベースに
　　した日本（アジア）の数え方の違いを。　しかも、3と4の最小公倍数は12であることを。　
　　欧米は3を選び、日本は4を選んだのです。　一緒にすればいいのに。

　　ほんと、ややこしいですね！　一から千（10³）までは英語、日本語共に、10倍毎の単独の単位があるが、
　　万（10⁴ ）からは一つずつずれて、3と4の最小公倍数の12個目で、やっと、兆と trillion で単独単位として
　　表現出来る。
　　なので、日本語⇔英語で、変換する時に、考え込みますね。
　　＜例＞
　　　1284592671
　　　　日本語：　４桁で区切って、12、8459、2671　→ 「十二億 八千四百五十九万 二千六百七十一」
　　　　英語　 ：　３桁で区切って、1、284、592、671　→ 1 billion + 284 million + 592 thousand + 671
　　　　　　　　　　 → One billion two hundred eighty-four million five hundred ninety-two thousand
　　　　　　　　　　　　 six hundred and seventy-one

　　英語では、最後の２桁（10の位と1の位）の前に and を入れて、終わりを表現する事が多い。

　　ここで、ちょっと御勉強が出来る方は、気になる事はないでしょうか？　billion の bi 及び trillion の tri と
　　累乗の数が合ってないじゃないか？と。　　
　　bi は bicycle 「２輪の自転車」、 bilingual 「２ヶ国語話せる」 等の様に 「2つの」の意味で、tri は triangle
　　「三角形」、triple 「３倍の」の様に 「３つの」の意味なのに、billion = 10⁹、trillion = 10¹² なのは何故か？
　　筆者は、こう考えました。

　　　 million　= 10⁶　 = 10^{(3 + 3x1)} = 10³ x 10^3ｘ1 = thousand x thousand¹
　　　 billion　 = 10⁹　 = 10^{(3 + 3x2)} = 10³ x 10^3x2 = thousand x thousand²
　　　 trillion　 = 10¹²　= 10^{(3 + 3x3)} = 10³ x 10^3x3 = thousand x thousand³

　　基本単位の１000に対して、更に1000の１乗、２乗、３乗が掛けられたものだと理解出来る。　
　　million の milli は、下の接頭辞に示す様に、10^-3で、３の意味も持つ。　なので、1000に 10³を掛けた
　　ものだと想像出来る。　ちょっと、無理が有る様な説明ですが、こうやって覚えました。

　　序に言えば、teen と ty って、聞き損う事がありませんか？　大きな違いは、〜teen は 後ろのteen に
　　アクセントがあるのに対して、〜ty は 前の〜 にあるので、迷った時は、これで区別出来る。 逆に、言う
　　時は、間違えられない様に、アクセントを強調しましょう。
　　＜例＞
　　　　　sixteen　「シックスティーン」　　　sixty　「シックスティ」

　　数詞ではないですが、化学、物理の基本単位の接頭辞として、10^-12 = pico、10^-9 = nano、10^-3 = milli、
　　10^-2 = centi、10^-1 = deci、10 = deca、10² = hecto、10³ = kilo、10⁶ = mega、10⁹ = giga、
　　10¹² = tera 等も全く同様で、10^-3 〜 10³ は単独の単位で、それら以外は10³おきに単位がある。

　b） 少数　
　　小数点は、point と書き、それ以下は1数字ずつ読む。

　　　　9689.533　→　nine thousand six hundred and eighty-nine point five three three

　c） 年号　
　　基本的に、2桁ずつに分けて読む。 但し、ゼロがある場合は、色々な表現がある。

　　　　1996　→　nineteen ninety-six
　　　　2009　→　twenty zero nine, twenty o nine, two thousand (and) nine

　　100の位がゼロの場合、thousand を使う事がある。　また、zero 「ジィロウ」や o 「オウ」と読んだりする。

2） 序数詞　
　a） 数え方　
　　順序を示す数字です。

　　　　first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth,
　　　　thirteenth,,,,,,,, twentieth, twenty-first,,,,,,, hundredth,,,,,,,,thousandth,,,,,,,,,

　　＜覚え方＞
　　　1．3番目までは、spell をまる覚え。
　　　2．4番目から19番目までは、「数字+tｈ」となるが、e は省き、ve を f に、ｔ は重ねないのは、基数詞で
　　　　　teen、ty を付ける時の法則と同じだが、nine の場合のみ違う。
　　　　　　　five + th → fifth、eight + th → eighth、niｎe + th → ninth、twelve + th → twelfth
　　　3．20番目、30番目、40番目、、、、、は、ty + th → tieth　に
　　　　　　これは、「子音+ y」の動詞に s を付ける場合と「子音+ y」の形容詞に er、est を付ける場合と同じ
　　　4．100番目は hundredth、1000番目は thousandth、100万番目は millionth。
　　　5．21番目以上で１の位がゼロでない場合は、１の位を序数にする。

　　　　32571番目　→　thirty-two thousand five hundred (and) seventy-first

　　表記の場合、次の様に書く場合も多い。
　　　　first → 1st、second → 2nd、third → 3rd, fourth → 4ｔｈ、、、、

　b） 日付　
　　月は呼び名で、日は序数で表す。

　　アメリカでは、月、日、年の順だが、イギリスは基本通りに小さい単位からで、日、月、年の順である。　
　　このせいで、数字表記では誤解を生じ易い。　筆者も、アメリカでサインする時、心配でした。　間違わない
　　様に、公式書類には、文字で書く様にしてました。
　　日の序数は、形容詞の節で説明する様に、限定されているので、基本的には the を前に置くが、表記では
　　付けず、読みの場合に、書かれてなくても、the を付けて読む。　
　　アメリカもイギリスも日は数字に st, nd, rd, th を付け、月は文字で表記する事が多い。　
　　但し、アメリカ的読みでは the を省き、表記では st, nd, rd, th すら省略することもある。　何でも簡単に
　　しちゃうのです。
　　曜日が入る場合は、最初に置き、アメリカでは曜日の後にカンマを書くが、イギリスでは書かない事が多い。
　　曜日が無い場合、年の前にカンマを入れる。

　c） 分数　
　　分子、分母の順で、分子は基数詞、分母は序数詞で表記する。　
　　分子が２以上の時は、分母の序数詞を複数形とする。

　　　　1/2　→　one second　　　　　　one half とも表現
　　　　2/3　→　two thirds
　　　　3/4　→　three fourths　　　 　　three quarters とも表現
　　　　4/7　→　four sevenths
